MUSIC VIDEO RESEARCH
For my music video, I acquired a lot of my inspiration from different songwriters. I then studied them to find out what makes them so visually and artistically appealing to their audiences.
Starting my research
Music Video: Stay (Gracie Abrams)
I chose this music video because the music video and the lyrics are heartfelt. It’s very relatable for them. But mostly, I chose to analyze this music video because it evokes a sense of nostalgia, which is something I want to incorporate into my own video. Gracie Abrams’ music video showcases a variety of clips that look like they were taken from a film camera, and utilizes a lot of pastels as well.
In my own music video, I would like to draw inspiration from this, by using lots of clips of human life and experiences and happiness, and use clips that look old, as if they were taken from an old camera. This is how I will achieve the sense of nostalgia.
The music video I analyzed was from 3 years ago, and it’s targeted towards a female, teenage audience. Which is how I want to skew my music video towards as well.
Throughout the whole video, the audience is subjected to quick shots and clips of a girl in her everyday life, which I think is perfect because I want my audience to be able to relate to my video. There’s nothing particularly special or out of this world about Gracie Abrams’ music video, it’s just your average girl living her life.
The color gradients utilized throughout are also blurry, almost representative of a memory, which I may also use within my own video.
Target Audience
Young, female audience
My target audience is teenage girls. Since I myself am a teenager and a girl, I want to make a music video about female friendship and happiness, and so my target audience will be young women as well. I am confident that it will be relatable for my audience too, since everyone has friends!
The music video will reach my audience by using social media platforms like instagram and youtube, since most teenagers are on those apps.
Digipak Analysis
Front Cover (Ztrak)
While this album cover is more harsh, using darker gradients and bolder letters, I like the layout of the main item being centered as the focal point, and the name of the album/song on the top, with the producer on the bottom. I’d like to emulate this in my own album cover, but use more pastels, and possibly a different font.
I do, however, want to put a car on the cover. I want it to have a jeep in the middle, with all the characters featured in the music video sticking their heads out.
CD/Disk Analysis
The CD shown demonstrates a light and airy feel, I also like the use of nature with a main focal point of the figure in the bottom center. Since I want to incorporate a lot of nature and life and light into my video, I want the CD to be representative of that as well.
Some changes I would make, however, would be to incorporate more color into it. I feel like the gray doesn’t correlate as much with my own music video, and adding some color into mine would create a sense of youthfulness and fun that I want to include.
Social Media Engagment
Social media engagement is important for the release of any media. We can see in a few examples, for instance, Taylor Swift's Instagram, where she utilizes the media to excite her fans, and even leaves easter eggs to foster online engagement with her listeners and get them involved in the music process.
I will likewise use social media to promote my music video. Firstly, I plan to use hashtags to get my posts out to not just my followers, but to get it on the Instagram Explore Page, which takes hashtagged posts and pushes it out to viewers who enjoy similar algorithms. I also plan to post often, posting real media, and also stories. Through my Instagram stories, I want to post community polls, Q&As, and relevant advertising for my video. This will get my audience anticipating its release. I will also advertise on my Instagram to recruit actors for my video.
I posted this to find actors for my music video. I created the post with an online app, which I will link below.
